President’s Perspective by John Clavio

I am sure that we all grew up being taught the concept of sharing with our siblings and the other kids in the neighborhood. We were taught to give to those that need help. Being raised catholic….often I would hear, It is in giving that we receive.

Funny thing is I never heard the concept of volunteering.  Even though I may not have heard the term, I always saw my mom participating in the planning of different events at church, at our school or working on her class reunion committee.  Having siblings, my dad was always involved with coaching of our sports teams.  Often my dad would accompany my brother and I on camping trips with the Boy Scouts.  I guess as they say,  Seeing is believing! My parents were volunteering.  It was something that you didn’t talk about, you just did it.

I am certain that many of you probably had the same experience growing up. Now that we are adults, it is our turn. As hard as it is to commit the time, with family and work and other societal influences, the rewards of volunteering can be tenfold.

Based on my personal volunteer experiences, very little bad comes from volunteering.  Though your efforts may not always be widely recognized and applauded, know that your efforts are touching the lives of others in someway and you will be rewarded for your efforts.  It’s called KARMA!  And I truly believe in it.

Wherever your volunteer contributions lead you I am certain you will be successful.  I like to say the key to successful volunteering is:

            Volunteer because you want to, not because you have to;

            Volunteer for the overall better good, not just for you personal gain; and,

            Volunteer to give back, to say thanks for all you have been given!
